Stitch Fix Review #39!

2016-06-25 13.58.08

Friends…it’s been a week. It always is, isn’t it, when you’re gearing up for vacation, but this week also saw me stricken with migraine in the midst of one of the craziest work streaks I’ve had in ages. Defenses were low, expectations around me were high, and as I headed into the weekend, I found myself giving in to a slew of dark thoughts about myself, about food, about pretty much everything. My Fix arrived in the middle of it all, a couple of days early, while I was on my own for several hours. Trying it on, I found myself unable to get past the fact that staring back at me in the mirror is the heaviest version of me that I have ever been. It was a mood that had been creeping up for a few days, ever since I decided to try on all my bikinis in anticipation of vacation. I can pick outfits that flatter but a bikini is a bikini is a bikini, and there’s nowhere to hide in them.

The body in the mirror makes me feel like a failure. Like I can’t even eat like a normal person.

I almost didn’t blog this Fix because the thoughts were so dark and I was afraid to post the photos of me at this weight. And to be truthful, I’m not out of the funk yet even though I decided to blog it after all. I keep finding my mind circling back to obsessing over how I can lose weight without dieting, and I know where that particular train of thought leads. I don’t know how to get out of this place today, but I do know how to not let it thoroughly defeat me, and part of that is writing about it. So here we go.

2016-06-25 13.41.45If you are not familiar with Stitch Fix, here’s the deal: Stitch Fix is an online personal styling service. You can subscribe for regular Fixes or just schedule them as you like. You fill out an extensive online profile of your tastes, sizes, and budget preferences and for a $20 fee, one of their stylist puts together a box of 5 clothing and accessory items to ship right to your door! You have 3 days to try things on, solicit opinions, balance your budget, whatever — you send back anything that doesn’t work for you in a prepaid envelope, and keep whatever you love! Your $20 styling fee is applied to anything you decide to keep, and if you buy the whole box of items you get 25% off the entire box! Prices vary but they say the average cost per item is $55 – 65. If you haven’t ever tried it and are interested, please consider using my referral link. If you use my link to schedule a Fix, I get a $25 credit towards my next purchase! (Note that I do not receive any compensation for reviewing this service; I just enjoy doing it).

adorraskinnies

Adorra Skinny Jean by Just Black ($88). I love that Stephanie remembers my requests, even several Fixes past the ask. I told her awhile ago that I had outgrown my beloved Mavi skinnies and was looking for another pair — no rush because I usually wear these more in the cooler months, with boots. She sent these, from Just Black, which are becoming my favorite brand of jeans (they also provided me with my fantastic bootcut jeans last year). They are a great dark wash and fit perfectly, with just right amount of stretch. I wanted to wear these all night. Pardon the butt shot! Verdict: KEEP!

rosydress

Rosy Dress by Renee C ($64). I absolutely dig the print and color of this v-neck shift dress, but it was so tight in the hips that I almost couldn’t get it on and pulled down enough to be photographed! Kind of disheartening, kind of made me want to just give up eating altogether. Instead, I took it off, folded it up, put it in the return bag, and moved on. Verdict: Return.

sinclaireblouse

Sinclair Button Front Blouse by Kut from the Kloth ($68). Again, Stephanie went into my history of requests to offer up this lovely piece. There are about a million things about it I would normally reject out of hand: it’s totally sheer, it has tab sleeves, it’s collarless, etc. And yet…I put it on and loved it. I think it’s pretty. My husband suggested it looked a little mature for me but you know what? I turn 45 next week. I get to be mature. Verdict: KEEP.

eklandtop

Ekland Lace Top by Brixon Ivy ($58). I didn’t think I would like this as much as I do! It requires a strapless bra, for one thing, and for another the length hits me right at my widest point. By the time I got to trying this one on, though, I was so far past Disappointing Body Image that I managed to land squarely in Who Gives a Crap, This is Pretty. I love the back detail, the mixed material, and the colors. Now the challenge is to be brave enough to pull it out of my closet and actually wear it out. Verdict: KEEP.

lolahhalter

Lolah Stripe Halter Knit Top by Loveappella ($48). Heartbreak! I’ve had this cute top Pinned for months, and Stephanie came through for me. But it was a bad fit, and not a bad enough fit to attempt to exchange for a smaller size. It was just a bit too long, a bit too wide, a bit too gapey in the back. I hated to return it, but since the dress already made this not a 5/5 box, I was actually looking for at least one other thing to return. Between this and the Brixon Ivy top, this poor fit put it straight back in the bag. Verdict: Return.

So that’s me and Fix 39. I hope to be in a better state of mind next time, 45 years old, back from vacation, and ready to head into rehearsals for the role of a lifetime. Until then, though, I’m just focus on one day at a time.

I love your blog and happy you decided to post despite feeling down. I am in your age group and I feel you. Also get Migraines including a horrible one recently that lasted several days on my first week of a new job. Also I gained some weight recently though like you am not overweight! We still look awesome! You really look perfect in these photos , don’t doubt this!

Which FB board did you join for stitch fix?

Hi Stacy! Thanks so much for your comment! I am feeling especially not awesome looking in the bikinis I have been wearing for days now…even though I know, in my head, it’s way less if anything to anyone else than it is to me!

I am a member of of the SF Buy/Sell/Trade Discussion group – I think it is up over 40k members now!
